5 Willard Place, Hudson

Located on a quiet cul-de-sac just two blocks from Hudson’s bustling Warren Street, The Croff House maintains both the historic spirit and modern sensibilities of the area. The former single-family, three-story home was built in 1875, in the Second Empire style. In 2009, after seven months of renovations, owners Duncan Calhoun and Russell Gibson opened the house to guests.
Downstairs, you’re greeted by a sweeping staircase, original to the building (it was once voted the most beautiful staircase in Columbia County). The inviting living room boasts a wood-burning fireplace, and room to cozy up to a good book from the library found just across the hall. The dining room (which has glass pocket doors, original to the house) opens up to outdoor seating areas and gorgeously landscaped gardens. Speaking of green, The Croff House’s environmental efforts have placed it on the Silver Level in Trip Advisor’s Green Leaders program.
Upstairs, each of The Croff House’s five guest rooms is named after the original homeowners of Willard Place (formerly a private, gated community, dating back to 1872). Deluxe suites feature gas-burning fireplaces, charming, stained-glass accents, and claw-foot soaker tubs, big enough for two. The use of natural light and air is an integral part of the interior design, making all rooms warm and inviting, but not too stuffy and old-fashioned.
Personal touches are all around, from the next day’s weather card left on your pillow, to the handmade aromatherapy candle that you’re encouraged to take home as a reminder of your stay. And before you check out, glance through the journals filled with heartwarming thank-you notes left for Calhoun and Gibson — and even write your own.
The Breakfast
Set your alarm in time for The Croff House’s daily 9 a.m. three-course breakfast. Duncan’s double raspberry muffins are a Croff House staple, and yes, they’re still warm when they hit your plate. Fork down a palate-cleansing parfait, but save room for hearty offerings like huevos rancheros or quiche, typically served with perfectly crispy potatoes. Those with dietary restrictions are encouraged to contact the B&B before booking a reservation.
Rates: Summer weekend rates start at $205/night.
