A Popular Market is Making its Return — Now With Slow-Smoked BBQ

Peach Lake Market is under new ownership and now offers barbecue you have to try.

Bob Soto has fond memories of Peach Lake Market from when he was growing up in North Salem: A resident of the town for 37 years, Soto remembers getting great sandwiches and having a place to come with both family and friends. After going through a number of name changes and owners, when the chance came to “bring the market back to its glory days,” Soto couldn’t resist. But he added an additional lure for the neighbors — his barbecue, giving birth to Peach Lake Market & BBQ.

Soto, who has experience in the restaurant and catering business, first approached barbecue as a hobby and had a smoker at his home. His knowledge grew, and he branched into serving barbecue at the former Outhouse Orchards (now Harvest Moon) during the apple-picking season. Soto is quick to point out that what he serves is “authentic, with the meats cooked low and slow.” The smoker that’s found outside Peach Lake Market has to be tended as barbecue is a long process — the meat is rubbed two to three days before it goes on the smoker and, depending on the protein, has to cook for hours.

The meat is delectable. I tried a sampler of pulled pork, thinly sliced brisket (Soto says he’s learned the trick to keeping it moist) and baby back ribs. There’s a variety of sauces to sample and sides including collard greens and garlic mashed potatoes. In addition to the barbecue there are all manners of sandwiches, desserts, and the unexpected treat of cold brew and nitro-coffee.

Soto says that “consistency is key” in both barbecue and customer service. Down the road he’s planning to add a butcher case and offering customers the option of having him cook the meat. And he’s eyeing delivery service.
