A Foodie's Guide To Citi Field

Citi Field opened in 2009 to mixed reviews, with some dismayed that there was more green on the premises than the Mets’ traditional orange and blue colors, or suggesting that it lacked a hometown feel. But from the first game forward, the team has gone above and beyond to make their stadium into a foodie’s fantasy. Whether you’re craving steak sammies, crisp craft beer, or cold ice cream, here’s a quick, recommended sampler menu of Citi Field’s bites and beverages.

Appetizer: While hot dogs and warm pretzels are more traditional fare at a ballgame, Pig Guy NYC introduced Citi Field patrons to bacon on a stick last year. Dipped in fantastic toppings such as s’mores or my personal favorite, sweet and spicy maple, the bacon is thick-cut and absolutely loaded with flavor. The best part is you can get two huge pieces for $12, making this a great ballpark appetizer.

Beverages: Big Apple Brews, located both behind home plate in the upper deck and in centerfield on the field level offers fans a wide variety of beer and ciders. Unlike many ballparks that serve up some combination of Budweiser and Coors, Big Apple Brews has dozens of crafts beers to choose from including selections from Goose Island, Kona, and Shock Top. In addition, many Citi Field stands feature specialty beers of their own.

Course Number 1: Baseball is a sport of patience. In order to last an entire season, players have to be well conditioned and ready for the dog days of summer. The same can be said for foodies entering Citi Field. With so many options, it’s important to save room for two courses. If you’re going, there is one major choice you have to make once you reach centerfield: steak or beef. If it’s steak that you’re looking for, Pat LaFrieda’s filet mignon sandwich is the destination. This thing is loaded with high quality steak, cheese, and onions. If you’ve got beef on the brain, then nothing can beat Shake Shack, thanks to a menu that includes their famous ‘Shroom Burger and their classic Double Shack, in addition to add ons like fries and a black-and-white shake if you’re feeling ambitious.

Course Number 2: For me, nothing beats Fuku’s spicy chicken fingers. A new can’t-miss addition this year, Fuku offers their lightly breaded, super spicy white-meat chicken fingers and a dark-meat spicy chicken sandwich that leaves your mouth feeling tingly as the accents work their way through your sinuses.

Dessert: Now that your mouth is fired up, it’s important that you’ve got something to cool you off. The ideal option might be to wait on line again at Shake Shack for a milkshake, but save yourself the trouble and go for a vintage Mister Softee sundae, served in a mini-Mets batting helmet. Not to mention, with locations scattered throughout the stadium, you’ll miss out on that much less of the game.
