7 Westchester Kitchens To Covet (And Copy)

Swanky and Sophisticated

The mauve onyx countertop in the dining area inspired the color palette in this kitchen, says designer Jason Landau. The high-gloss, reconstituted gray wood veneer of the cabinets helps to soften the color and blends beautifully with the stainless-steel appliances. “I echoed the onyx color with the mauve-painted tall island cabinetry, which, along with the onyx counter, helps to block the work surface while dining at the kitchen table,” he says. “Light beige quartz adds contrast on both the horizontal and vertical surfaces, and the entire color scheme was tied together with the multicolored glass and stainless-steel backsplash tile. Crystal light fixtures were chosen to add a bit of bling, making for a swanky environment.”

Chic Transitional

The best thing about buying a spec home before it’s finished is being able to get exactly what you want. And the owners of this Croton-on-Hudson home saw the exact kitchen they wanted in the showroom of East Hill Cabinetry in White Plains. “We just gave them a different color palette for their kitchen: a soft, custom off-white, linen-finish paint,” says Anthony Maucieri, who owns the company. Stacked cabinetry softens the look of the upper cabinets, with custom, inset Shaker-style doors; the countertops are marble; and the backsplash is made of handcrafted crackle subway tiles. The light fixtures are from Restoration Hardware.

The Multitasker

The husband is a gourmet chef who wanted a six-burner range with a grill and griddle; the wife loves to bake and needed a separate baking section. He wanted modern; she wanted a classic design. And the kids needed a space for homework and hanging out in this Bronxville apartment. “The space was tight and narrow and needed to be multipurpose for this family of four,” says designer Rajni Alex. The island with a steel countertop is quite slim, but packs a lot of functionality, and the breakfast nook provides ample seating without taking up much space. “By doing dark walnut cabinets on two opposite walls with white cabinets on the other two, I was able to satisfy both the husband’s and wife’s design aesthetics,” Alex says.

A Golden Touch

This glorious open kitchen is the result of a gut renovation of a 1920s home in Scarsdale. The space originally housed an L-shaped kitchen along with dining and laundry rooms. “The house is owned by a young, growing family who didn’t want a formal dining room but, rather, a space they could all enjoy together,” says designer Ali Vanderpool, who, with her partner, Ariana Villalta, owns interior design firm The Elegant Abode. “So we opened it up to a family-style kitchen and moved the laundry out. We wanted to keep the space light and bright, so we used white cabinets but painted the island a soft blue to bring in more color. The rustic dining table and gold lighting and accents play off of each other to create a cozy, country feel with a touch of glam.”

A Designer’s Own

“The goal was to create a classic, timeless kitchen with modern, whimsical elements,” says Clean Design’s Claire Paquin of her own Scarsdale kitchen. To achieve that, the Shaker-style maple cabinets are painted white lacquer, while the island is made of ash and stained a dark black. “We added details like cylindrical metal feet and extra-long bar pulls to emphasize the scale of the cabinets,” Paquin says. She selected three different countertop materials that work well together and help define each space: black granite for the perimeter counters, stainless steel for
the island, and glass for the message center (not pictured).

Farmhouse Update

After 30 years in an old Victorian farmhouse, the owners of this Bronxville home wanted a change. A 53-inch bump-out was just enough to provide ample kitchen space, with generous storage and countertop work areas, while improving the room’s function. “Dishes are stored and displayed on open shelves to keep the open, airy feel,” says designer Terry Scarborough, “while the cedar windows, casings, beams, and boards on the ceiling add drama.” Alder-stained wood was used for the custom cabinetry to coordinate with the warm tones of the cedar ceilings.

Colorado Dreaming

“The clients’ favorite vacation spot is Aspen, and they wanted their new kitchen to reflect that vibe,” says Pleasantville designer Mara Solow. “The colors and organic materials—like the natural stone, and hand-blown glass mosaic tiles on the backsplash—evoke images of canyons and rock formations seen out West, but become transitional with a modern feel in this setting, especially when juxtaposed with the stainless-steel appliances.”
