When it comes to food, September is possibly the best month of the year, promising the last of summer’s ripe tomatoes and fruit, and the start of apple season. Whether we’re clinging to the last days of summer or craving comfort food, here’s what you’ll find us ordering this fall.
Slow-roasted Garden Tomato Toast at Boro6
549 Warburton Ave, Hastings-on-Hudson; 914.231.9200
When it comes to summer produce, we’re fans of treating is as simply as possible. Boro6 nailed that ethos with this toast — a slice of thick-cut bread, smeared with ricotta, and topped with candy-sweet tomatoes from the wine bar’s own garden — that’s one of the best bites we had all summer.
Chicken Parm at Pizzeria La Rosa
12 Russell Ave, New Rochelle; 914.633.0800
Fall’s first cold snap cues comfort food cravings. For its version of the red-sauce classic, La Rosa makes all the right moves: Chicken thighs are brined for 24 hours, fried, blanketed in just-enough milky mozzarella, and served on top of (read: no soggy cutlets here) plenty of spicy tomato sauce.
Cider Donuts at Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard
138 Hardscrabble Rd, North Salem
In the debate over who makes Westchester’s best cider donuts, we don’t like to take sides. But, we’ll take a stab at whose are the most popular. Lines of cars suggest that these bags of hot, misshapen, sugar-coated donuts are on everyone’s must-eat list — including ours.

Disco is Dead Fries at Bridge View Tavern
226 Beekman Ave, Sleepy Hollow; 914.332.0078
Another sign of the season: football, beer, and bar food. Bridge View Tavern ticks all our boxes for a game-time hang with flat-screen TVs, an impressive selection of craft beers (Rushing Duck, Sloop, SingleCut, Hill Farmstead, and more), and these fries, loaded with wild-boar-chorizo chili, homemade cheese sauce, pickled jalapeños, and bacon.
All the Pies at Baked by Susan
163 Grand St, Croton-on-Hudson; 914.862.0874
An all-butter crust is the key to owner Susan O’Keefe’s popular pies, made with unprocessed ingredients and fresh fruit. This month, get a taste of both seasons, when you can catch the last of summer’s peach pies, and every imaginable permutation of apple (classic, crumb-topped, with pear, and more).
