4 Places to Cool Down With Gelato This Weekend

Denser, more intensely flavored, and every bit as (if not more) delicious than its all-American cousin, gelato is one summer pleasure we’ve been looking forward to. With the mercury forecast to climb this Memorial Day weekend, we’ve rounded up four places to get your fix.

Pane & Gelato

290 White Plains Rd, Eastchester; 914.337.1800

Sicilian-born owner Paolo Pilano is proud to say he’s from “the land of gelato.” That pride and expertise shows in his all-natural, hous–made gelato using only Italian ingredients. Choices include a pantheon of Italian classics — Sicilian pistachio, almond, stracciatella, Nutella, and more — plus refreshing, Sicilian-style granitas in flavors like watermelon, lemon, and pomegranate. Not sure what to order? Try the house-made brioche sandwiched with gelato (trust us), the Italian answer to an ice cream sandwich.

La Fenice Rye

3 Purdy Ave, Rye; 914.305.2487

The second location of the popular Greenwich shop — the artisanal gelatos are still churned there, before being brought to Rye — blends Italian ingredients with locally sourced fruit. While signature choices like hazelnut, Nutella, salted caramel, and chocolate made with high-quality Swiss cocoa, are generally on offer, keep an eye out for one-off flavors like seasonal Italian cherry, tequila-raspberry, and papaya.

Joey’s Cannoli

18 Division St, New Rochelle; 914.740.5051

Yes, the inventive cannoli, including the Ferrero Rocher-topped namesake, are the big draw, but this New Rochelle café also dabbles in imported gelato with flavors like torrone, vanilla, coconut, and tiramisù. Besides cones and cups, Joey’s blends gelato with shots of espresso for a milkshake-meets-frapuccino-style drink and serves the Cannoli Explosion, one of its signature large cannoli topped with gelato.

Dolce Vita Café

1877 Commerce St, Yorktown Heights; 914.352.6464

This new addition, run by Northern Italian transplants who recently moved to Westchester, specializes in Italian desserts, including a selection of gelatos. Expect imported-from-Italy options, including classic coffee, dulce de leche, strawberry, and coconut, plus a selection of sorbets.
