HDSW Virtual Gala – One Community In Art & Song

June 10 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

NYS Lt. Governor Joins With The Human Development Services of Westchester To Recognize Local Champions

Human Development Services of Westchester (HDSW) is pleased to announce that Bernadette Kingham-Bez and Sabrina Borst and Peter H. Rubinstein, DMD will be recognized for their extraordinary work and generous support for individuals and families with behavior health issues. The presentations will be made during the Virtual Gala 2021 – One Community Together in Art and Song on Thursday June 10th at 6 PM.

Bernadette Kingham-Bez is the Executive Director for Saint Vincent’s Hospital and Senior Vice President of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. Ms. Kingham- Bez is recognized as a champion in the mental health area for both hospital and community based programs. She is being honored for her ongoing compassion for patients with mental health and substance abuse illness. As Exec. Dir. of St Vincent’s and SVP of St Joseph’s Medical Center she is respected as a leader who cares for people and children that are vulnerable and creates an environment where they can find quality treatment services and rehabilitative care. She has been a long-time friend and partner of HDSW.

Sabrina Borst and Peter H. Rubinstein, DMD are supporters and advocates of the HDSW Living Room Crisis Day Respite Program. Located in Mamaroneck, NY. The Living Room program is a non-hospital setting designed to provide a comfortable, calm and relaxed environment, open 7 days per week including all holidays from 8:30 AM – 8:30 PM, for those who need a safe place to support their well-being. As an alternative to a visit to an emergency room, guests are offered both peer and professional support to develop short and long term planning strategies and receive Best Practice services to address their immediate situation.

Peter H. Rubinstein DMD, now retired, was a talented cosmetic dentist serving patients in Manhattan and the greater New York area. Sabrina Borst is a co-owner and Vice President of The Research Firm, a market research company that develops consumer packaged goods. Peter and Sabrina continue to support the Living Room Crisis Day Respite Program in memory of their son Mark Rubinstein, who was a case worker at HDSW.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul will be offering greetings and congratulations for all the honorees with special mention of our elected representatives, for their extraordinary support and service to HDSW clients and the essential superhero staff throughout the pandemic

County Executive George Latimer, Commissioners Norma Drummond and Michael Orth, NYS Majority Leader Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins, NYS Senator Shelley Mayer, NYS Assemblyman Steve Otis, County Legislators Nancy Barr and Catherine Parker are the local officials to be recognized.

“This has been an extraordinary year for our clients and our super hero staff,” said Kathy Pandekakes, HDSW CEO. “We are so grateful for the support we received from all of our elected officials and Commissioners.” As an essential service agency HDSW has been working tirelessly for our clients. Its dedicated staff now delivers both online programs and in person outreach to individuals and families who continue to seek services. In addition to providing programs at H.O.P.E House which focuses on Employment, Education and Social Engagement, Care Management services offer support to those recovering from Physical Health and Behavioral Health-related illnesses so they may remain stable in the community.

The residential programs offer both transitional and permanent housing options to individuals and families. HDSW programs provide outreach services to over 3,000 persons throughout the County. This year due to Covid 19 the organization was required to create an emergency food pantry and a diaper bank to answer the needs of those who faced these challenges during this unprecedented time. HDSW has remained vigilant ensuring that the daily concerns for both staff and clients are met. Unable to have its Annual Gala last year, due to the pandemic, Ms. Pandekakes said, we are hosting a virtual event this year with an art show featuring our clients’ work, music by Metropolitan Klezmer Band and a special hors d’oeuvres box delivered to the door of those who will be attending. It plans to be a very special night.
