Sip your way through Westchester’s very own seasonally inspired craft beers through the end of winter at these local breweries.
With less than a month of winter left and nearly no snow on the ground here in Westchester, it’s been quite an uneventful season. However, that did not stop local breweries from crafting winter-inspired beverages with notes of caramel, coffee, and vanilla. In other words, they’re brews designed to be sipped on in the winter next to a crackling fire. So, before springtime officially rolls around, here are the brews you should be sampling in Westchester.
Alternative Medicine Brewing
29 Elm Ave, Suite 1A, Mount Vernon; 914.530.3269
Drink This: Anniversary Ale I (2022), Imperial Stout
This beer is the brewery’s anniversary stout, and it spent a whole year inside a Black Dirt bourbon barrel that was hand-rolled every day. (Now that’s love.) As a result, drinkers can expect a roasty black IPA that has also been heavily hopped with Amarillo. The 7% ABV drink is a refreshing one with a malty, orangey, and slightly bitter taste.
Captain Lawrence Brewing Company
444 Saw Mill River Rd, Elmsford; 914.741.2337
369 Lexington Ave, Mt Kisco; 845.261.3279
Drink This: Double Pull, Imperial Stout
Captain Lawrence and The Black Cow teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind beverage, the Double Pull. This imperial stout is brewed with milk, sugar, espresso, flaked oats, and, best of all, locally made coffee. Enjoy dense layers of fudge and espresso with warm vanilla notes. This brew was also made using a barrel-aging process. Grab a pint at either the Elmsford or Mount Kisco locations.
Decadent Ales
139 Hoyt Ave, Mamaroneck; 914.848.4060
Drink This: Snowball, Imperial Stout
After browsing the menu of Decadent Ales, it’s hard to settle on just one beer as the brewery dishes out a handful of unique drinks. While winter lasts, we would have to go with the Snowball, a heavy-bodied imperial stout. After one sip of this dark beer, you will be met with delightful notes of coconut and chocolate fudge. This is the perfect choice for an after-dinner treat.
Soul Brewing Company
41 Wheeler Ave, Pleasantville; 913.800.7685
Drink This: Winter Soulstice
Soul Brewing Company offers an impressive lineup of brews. Its Winter Soulstice is a Belgian, monastic-style, strong, dark ale with 9% ABV. The beer is stacked with flavors of caramel, figs, and other dark and fruity flavors with hints of spiciness and cinnamon. The brewery also collaborated with Alternative Medicine Brewing in Mount Kisco and concocted a smooth and roasty IPA; the Alternative Soul Black IPA has a balanced bitterness and hop with notes of candied orange.
Wolf & Warrior
195 E Post Rd, White Plains; 914.368.8617
Drink This: Quantified Theory, Belgian Quadrupel
Coined as the perfect winter warmer, this beer was brewed with German and Belgian malts, Piloncillo and dark muscovado sugar, and traditional German hops. The Quantified Theory comes in at 10.5% ABV and is available on draft or in a 32-ounce crowler. The brew offers notes of caramel, toffee, and dark fruit.
