Unemployment stats for Westchester are in, and, according to the New York State Department of Labor, the news is good.
May’s unemployment rate was 5.1 percent. That’s down from 6.2 percent in May of 2013. (Anything in the low 5s is much closer to pre-recession norms.) The total number of employed people in Westchester fell by 1,500 workers since one year ago, however, a shrinking labor force offset that decline—it fell by 5,800 to 23,800.
When you look at counties in the region, Westchester is faring quite well, with only Putnam (4.7%) and Rockland (4.8%) faring better. Sullivan, with a 6.9% unemployment rate, has the highest in the region.
