Westchester Restaurant Preview: Petra Greek Restaurant

Should you visit Scarsdale’s new eatery?

Don’t expect the ethnically clichéd blue-and-white color scheme and cut-rate statuary of Aphrodite and Zeus at the new Greek restaurant, Petra. Instead, the cozy, (almost) 30-seat eatery, which opened in November, has blond wood flooring plus high ceilings accented by wrought-iron chandeliers and dark wood beams.

The menu is classic Greek fare with cold and hot apps, or mezedes, including kafteri (spicy feta and roasted red pepper dip) and ktapodi (char-grilled octopus); traditional specials like baked stuffed tomatoes and veal in a tomato sauce with orzo; yeero (that’s gyro to you non-Greeks) falafel platters; and a host of charcoal grilled mains such as baby lamb chops, skirt steak, swordfish, and numerous shrimp dishes. And many of the main dishes are less than $15.

Don’t forget the sweet stuff: Desserts, including baklava and Petra loukoumades, or fried dough with apples, are house-made.

There is a small grocery case in back with fresh herbs, olive paste, preserves, and other items. Petra also offers curbside pickup, a convenient service since it’s tough to find on-street parking.
