Westchester Painting Pros Reveal Their Favorite Paint Brands

The price of paint varies wildly—a spot check of local retailers found prices anywhere from around $27 for a gallon of Martha Stewart’s Glass of Milk, to $45 for Harmony White by Sherwin-Williams, to $85 for Farrow & Ball’s Great White. Benjamin Moore even offers four different quality levels of Linen White, ranging from $36 to $64 per gallon. So, is there really a difference between brands of paint? We asked local painting pros to weigh in.

“We recommend Benjamin Moore. It is the best quality for the average person and the most user-friendly out there. Fine Paints of Europe is a high-end, specialty paint brand; however, the average person may not know how to apply it, and, if so, they would be wasting their money.”

—John Lucchese, President, Designs Unlimited, Somers

“I like Benjamin Moore’s Aura line—it’s the Cadillac of paints. It has superior pigment, lasts and looks better, and has better scrub-ability—the ability to wash the surface without leaving behind spots. It is more expensive than others, but you need to use less of it.”

—Eric Horowitz, President, Bristol Painting, Somers

“We generally use Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams. We also sometimes use a Fine Paints of Europe finish. It depends on the circumstances of the project.”

—Paul Viggiano, Director of Administration and Marketing,

A.G. Williams Painting Co., Pelham

“I recommend Sherwin-Williams paint. It covers a wide range of applications; its durability and washability is superior; and it’s fairly priced.”

—Dave Williams, Owner, Williams Brothers Painting, Stamford, CT

“Benjamin Moore is by far the highest quality of any of the brands. The coverage is better—you need fewer coats; color retention is better; the color stays clearer and true longer; there’s not as much fading; and it’s much more durable. It also lasts longer than other brands. It costs a little bit more, but it’s worth every penny.
