Local color authority Debra Kling, of Debra Kling Colour Consultant, offers her thoughts on this year’s Pantone Color of the Year.
For 2022, for the first time ever, Pantone created a new shade for its much-anticipated Color of the Year program: a blue hue with violet-red undertones, called Very Peri, which serves as a beacon of creativity. The choice to create a new color for this year has been said to be a sign of the world’s incredible sense of innovation throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Pantone’s very own Very Peri — yes, the Pantone Institute invented the color for this very occasion — is a welcome choice!”
— Debra Kling
Kling shares her take on this new hue: “Pantone’s very own Very Peri — yes, the Pantone Institute invented the color for this very occasion — is a welcome choice! A cool contrast to the organic or grayed-down greens selected as the Color of the Year by most paint manufacturers, it plays well with them yet feels refreshing, like a new start. And don’t we all yearn for one in 2022?” Kling shares that she recently used a similar periwinkle, in a high-gloss finish, for a local Tudor home’s front door. “We think this is the perfect way to use Very Peri — and you’d be sure to have one of the first periwinkle porticos in the neighborhood.”
