In January, two young chefs from New Rochelle crushed the competition in a special siblings episode of Chopped. Now, another Queen City kid has the opportunity to shine on the sixth season of Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship.
One of a dozen competitors, 12-year-old Nyah Rosado was declared safe and moved on to the top seven in last week’s episode. If she wins the competition, she’ll take home $25,000 in prize money. That’s impressive for a kids who taught herself to bake while home sick for a few weeks one winter. Here, Rosado sounds off on her appearance on the show.
How did you feel when you found out you were going on the show?
I was so happy and excited. I was at the dentist so I couldn’t go crazy. When I went home, I cried tears of happiness. My dad almost cried, too. I was hugging and jumping with my family. My mom likes to tell the story of how she couldn’t believe I got on the show, but she was super excited and proud.
What was the best part of competing in the championship?
Meeting so many other kids who are into baking like me, as well as meeting [Kids Baking Championship hosts] Duff [Goldman] and Val [Bertinelli]. I made lots of friends that I still keep in touch with. Getting to bake in that big kitchen and have all the ingredients you could think of was also an awesome experience.
What did you learn from the experience?
I learned that you can’t be afraid. You can’t let people intimidate you or else you will not be able to focus. When you get scared and frazzled, you can barely function and bake. I just pushed through whenever it got hard.
Overall, how do you feel about your time on the show?
The experience that I had was amazing. I’m so glad that I was chosen for the show because I had so much fun and learned many new things about baking. I got to experience a different city with my mom and that was a special time for us. I learned a little about taping a show and production, things I had no idea about. Being on KBC is a time that I will never forget.
Kids Baking Championship airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on the Food Network.
