These Are 3 of Westchester’s Top Asian Grocery Stores

Where to get your bao, kimchi, and Pocari Sweat.

Looking for Asian specialties in Westchester? Get your bao, kimchi, and Pocari Sweat at these local grocery stores.

Westchester is still catching up to the city when it comes to Asian cuisine, but what you can’t find in a restaurant, you can always make at home or buy ready-made at a specialty grocery store. Here are three East Asian grocery stores to check out for fantastic snacks, ingredients, frozen meals, and home goods. Stop by for a quick lunch or to prepare a homemade feast.

H Mart

371 N Central Ave, Hartsdale; 914.448.8888

1789 Central Ave, Yonkers; 914.500.6550

H Mart is the best known Asian supermarket in the United States and abroad, stocking mostly Korean goods, plus items from across Asia and the world. The largest grocery store on this list, its two Westchester locations have the county’s best selection of Asian produce.

Also available are Asian kitchen utensils, cleaning supplies, and home goods. H Mart’s crowning glory, however, is its small food court, divided into three sections: Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. Fill your basket with fish cakes, Shin Ramyun, and spicy pickles from the extensive kimchi selection, then grab a bite of bibimbap before you leave.

Frontier Market Japanese Food & Deli

18 N Central Ave, Hartsdale; 914.831.3900

This Hartsdale Japanese grocery sells drinks, snacks, produce, frozen goods, home items, and cosmetics. Start by browsing the impressive aisle dedicated to chips, cookies, and other crispy, crunchies goodies. Then, pick up some cute kitchen utensils and tools that are perfect for packing colorful bento for the office. Ready-to-go meals include sushi, bento, and sandwiches, while independently owned Crea Bakery shares the building and sells beautiful Japanese-style cakes. Pick up a salmon onigiri, C.C. Lemon, and pack of Pretz for a perfect lunch (and maybe a coveted brand of mascara while you’re at it).

Asian Supermarket Golden Village

365 Central Ave, Scarsdale; 914.437.9795

This Chinese supermarket boasts a large selection of frozen and dried goods, as well as a small but specialized produce section. (It’s also right next to a bubble tea and pastry stop, Bubble Shop.) Along with a full selection of Chinese pastries, candies, and savory snacks, the long freezer section has dumplings, various baos, and scallion cakes. Also notable are the sauce, tea, and noodle aisles.

Instant ramen (or pao mian) is a whole different beast here, where different flavors abound that, with the help of an egg and some added veggies, can be the base for a hearty, and not entirely unhealthy, comforting meal. Pick up an interesting new flavor of noodles and frozen pack of dumplings for dinner, as well as some lychee jellies and Oolong for dessert.
