By the Way Bakery
574 Warburton Ave, Hastings-on-Hudson; 914.478.0555
The only totally gluten-free bakery in Westchester (it’s dairy-free, too!), By the Way Bakery offers custom cakes and everyday baked goods, including cookies, muffins, scones, and tea cakes. Cupcakes are perennial favorites, says owner Helene Godin, who sells “twice as many chocolate cakes as anything else.” The Coconut Cloud cake and seasonal cheesecakes are also very popular.
For the Holidays: By the Way will have its delicious sufganiyot (jelly donuts) which are baked, not fried, and filled with raspberry jam; Star of David sugar cookies; and a Christmas bûche de Noël.
Baked by Susan
163 Grand St, Croton-on-Hudson; 914.862.0874
At her Croton bakery, owner Susan O’Keefe says customers can enjoy baked goods that are both gluten-free and vegan. “I saw a greater emphasis on gluten-free a few years ago, and now we have a great many customers asking for vegan items, so I decided to have those two go hand-in-hand,” she says. At the bakery, the gluten-free offerings generally include a seasonal sweet bread, cupcakes, brownies, and oatmeal-raisin and chocolate chip cookies.
For the Holidays: Expect apple-cranberry fruit crisp and single-layer cakes in chocolate or vanilla.

Flourish Baking Company
160 Summerfield St, Scarsdale; 914.725.1026
There are two components to chef-owner Diane Forley’s baked good operations. One is Scarsdale’s Flourish Baking Company, a walk-in retail location of Forley’s wholesale nut-free, vegan, and organic bakery. The other is Meringue Shop, a special-order portion of the business. At Flourish, 80% of the baked goods are also gluten-free, and Forley offeres what she terms “grab-and-go” shopping, featuring gluten-free brownies, cookies, and seasonal doughnuts.
For the Holidays: Gift someone a box of colorful truffles from Meringue Shop.
Nutmeg Café
64 Main St, Tuckahoe; 914.779.1328
“The biggest explosion in the business since our 2016 opening has been in the gluten-free arena,” says owner Cindy Bothwell. Gluten-free baked goods at Nutmeg run the gamut from brownies to tea breads, and there’s generally a gluten-free seasonal pie available. Bite-size shortbread cookies in flavors like Mexican chocolate are top sellers.
For the Holidays: Gluten-free scones will be on the rotation.
Red Barn Bakery
4 S Astor St, Irvington; 914.231.7779
“The gluten-free portion of my business continues to grow and is now at more than 75%,” says owner Randell Dodge, whose popular breakfast bars, cookies, and pies, such as the seasonal ginger-pear, are all available as gluten-free.
There’s also gluten-free granola, a variety of gluten-free muffins and scones, and a gluten-free and vegan whoopie pies.
For the Holidays: Pick up a gluten-free bûche de Noël and Hanukkah-themed cookies.
