Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me” was aptly picked by Jinelle and Jeremy for their wedding song, not only because they are both huge Sinatra fans, but because they have probably been on more planes together than can be counted on all their fingers and toes.
In keeping with this theme, this savvy international couple decided on a travel-inspired wedding, as the two met while Jeremy (originally from Bath, England) was on assignment in the New York office for the large investment bank they both work for.
After two years of dating, Jeremy was again assigned abroad, this time to Bangalore, India. Knowing that this was the woman for him, Jeremy explained to their company that he and Jinelle were a packaged deal, so if he was to be moved again, they needed to find an equally great job opportunity for Jinelle. Jinelle had her own conditions as well. “I told Jeremy that if I was going to move all the way to India, that he had to make sure my passport was filled up with all the traveling we would be doing once there,” she says. Being a man of his word, Jinelle’s passport was completely filled after only a year and a half.
Not only do they travel internationally, but all around India as well. On one such weekend trip away to the Orange County Resort in Kabini, India. Jeremy popped the question on a Coracle, which Jinelle described as “an upside-down, mushroom-cap shaped boat.”
“Jeremy had wanted me to pick out the ring myself, so we actually bought the ring together, but he waited about two months after purchasing it to give it to me,” she says. “I think he was enjoying teasing me, because everywhere we would go he would say ‘this would be a good spot to get engaged.’”
When it came to reception locations it was a bit of a no-brainer, because Jinelle’s father is the manager of the Shenorock Shore Club in Rye, NY. “It is a gorgeous location right on Long Island Sound, with a grassy hilltop area for the ceremony and a deck off of the ballroom where the reception was held for the cocktail hour.”
They were in India while they were planning the wedding, so thankfully were able to rely on Jinelle’s family and friends to help organize things for them in the states. “We loved the band my sister used for her wedding, so we hired them as well, and my cousin Michelle got her certification as a minister to marry us.”
The travel theme was cleverly mixed into every aspect of the wedding. The invitations were passports, the save-the-dates were luggage tags, the program was cut into luggage-tag-shaped paper, and each table had a picture of Jinelle and Jeremy displayed on thick poster boards from the many places they had visited as a couple, complete with a brief description about the location in the picture. Even their seating chart was an airport destination board with dots directing the guests how to get to their tables.
“I had always wanted to have cupcakes at my wedding instead of a traditional wedding cake,” Jinelle explains. “Each one had an atlas map cupcake wrapper with flags for different states and highways sticking out of them.”
Some English traditions were also incorporated into the day. The menu was a blend of both cultures, such as filet mignon with Yorkshire pudding and green beans. During the ceremony, they had both traditional English and American readings. There were speeches between each course of the meal, as well as the groom himself making a speech, which is customary in the UK.
They chose to write their own vows, which were mostly serious, but with a funny twist at the end. Jeremy promised, “just to smile when you come home with another pair of new shoes without throwing out any other of your old ones,” and Jinelle promised, “just to smile when you insist on spending your weekends watching football—both American and European—not caring who wins.”
“After living in India for so long and seeing all the poverty and children in need there, we gave a donation to Children International in lieu of traditional gifts, as well as Lindt truffles in small candy cardboard boxes.”
“Our entire day was unique and very us,” Jinelle shares. “A couple of times I stopped to just take it all in and watch everyone and it couldn’t have come out more perfectly. I wouldn’t change a thing.”
