Pint-Sized Perspective

Throughout the month of August, writer Washington Irving’s family home becomes an epicenter of children’s activities during their annual event, From a Child’s Perspective. The Tarrytown home of the writer known for the hair-raising short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow welcomes family members of all ages during this weekly event that features a tour of Irving’s family home, games for children, and hands-on activities that vary from week to week. Attendees are invited to bring a picnic lunch and bask in the estate’s not-so-spooky scenery.

An Offer You Can’t Refuse

A mainstay of almost every film critic’s list of the top movies ever made, Francis Ford Coppola’s mafia-fueled epic The Godfather is once again hitting the silver screen in our region. This 1972 drama took home three Academy Awards, five Golden Globes, a Director’s Guild of America Award, and even a Grammy upon its initial release. This month, Stamford’s Avon Theatre will present a celebratory screening of the film in honor of its 45th anniversary. Following the rise and fall of a notorious New York crime family, the movie remains a seminal favorite of fans and critics worldwide, and provides ample reason to ditch an evening of Netflix for a night at the movies.

School of Hard Knocks

Guilty pleasures don’t apply only to food and TV shows. A tour-de-force of feel-good theater, Annie manages to blend comedy and cuteness with a heavy dollop of melodrama. This makes for one uber-watchable performance, bolstered by canonical songs like “It’s a Hard-Knock Life” and “Tomorrow.” Eschew high-minded theater and give in to a night of lighthearted laughs at the Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford, where Mary Jane Houdina will choreograph and direct a new production of this sentimental favorite.

Antique hunters, pickers, and local art lovers rejoice: It’s once again that time of year when the parking lot across the street from the Hastings-on-Hudson train station plays host to the Hastings Flea Market. This quirky and casual selection of local vendors offers antiques, artwork, handmade jewelry, vintage furniture, collectibles, and other oddities for sale — not to mention live music, food,
and crafts for kids. Taking place on the last Sunday of every month through November, this flea market is the ideal place to hunt for some truly unlikely treasures.

Laugh Track

While the name Paul Virzi might not ring any bells, this comedian’s star is seriously on the rise. Exhibit A: his performance at the Tarrytown Music Hall this month, which will be recorded for an upcoming TV special. Known for his quick wit and ultra-topical humor, Virzi’s debut comedy album, Night at the Stand, peaked at No. 1 on iTunes’ comedy charts and No. 4 on the Billboard Top 100. Having already graced the stages of venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to Madison Square Garden, this red-hot comedian will be joined by fellow comic Bill Burr and Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson.

Criminal Act

For months, rumors have swirled about a possible reunion of the acclaimed rock group Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals. Happily, the band is set to do just that at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, where the group known for combining blues, folk, soul, and rock will take the stage. Harper, a three-time Grammy Award winner, has cut 12 studio albums and was once named Rolling Stone’s Musician of the Year. No surprise fans are champing at the bit for this celebrated songwriter’s return.
