The Bronxville eatery fuses tavern and bistro-style fare to craft a one-of-a-kind menu that celebrates local ingredients.
There is a soothing warmth that crescendos over you once you step into Bronxville’s newest restaurant, The Tav’ery. What was once the dark wood of Coals Pizza has burst to life with a sleek, marble bar top, leather banquettes, and splashes of bold artwork thoughtfully hung throughout the space. None of that comes as a surprise when you discover the owners are Fiona Campbell and Marco Lojano, the husband-wife duo behind the beloved Rosie’s Bistro (just a few doors down, btw) and partner Francesca Cuzzipoli. For the trio, the eatery is as much about creating a place for the community to spend time as it is providing a well-executed meal. “The exciting aspect of The Tav’ery is creating this comfortable space for guests to gather and enjoy a bite to eat or a cocktail in a friendly environment,” says Campbell.
Even the crafting of what dishes to serve comes straight from the heart. “The menu is very reflective of options we enjoy ourselves,” says Campbell. “We opted for quality ingredients, good flavors, and worked with Executive Chef Miguel Bravo from Rosie’s to bring it together.” Done with an approachable elegance, the dishes served at The Tav’ery are familiar but with a twist. Think a vegetarian burger made of well-seasoned quinoa topped with arugula, avocado, pickled red onion, and a sriracha aioli; Guinness-braised short rib; and tantalizingly crispy fried chicken with grilled polenta and gravy. With sandwiches, don’t expect soggy chips or run-of-the-mill french fries: The Tav’ery serves sidewinders, the cool older cousin of shoestring fries that have a perfect crunch from all angles. For dessert, don’t pass up the ooey-gooey-sticky toffee cake with Tahitian vanilla gelato.
It’s easy to get wrapped up in this tantilizing food, but the bar program at The Tav’ery is not to be ignored. “The cocktails were created keeping in mind what is trending currently and from some of our personal favorites,” says Campbell. Sip on drinks such as The Other Paloma (mezcal, habanero, grapefruit, lime, soda) and Tav’ery Plane (Redemption bourbon, Aperol, Amaro Nonino, lemon juice) either with your meal or at the bar top during “Afterhours” (9 to 11 p.m.).
The Tav’ery has created a special place in the heart of downtown Bronxville — a tavern hybrid with the soul of the bar on Cheers but with the meals of Barefoot Contessa. With a theme of “Drink, Eat, Gather,” you’ll find it difficult to do anything but — and all in good company.
