Have You Seen Downtown White Plains’ Massive New Art Sculpture?

The impressive sculpture by Bulgarian artist Georgi Minchev greets Westchester residents and gallery visitors at the mixed-use building.

A nearly 18-foot-tall sculpture made of highly polished stainless steel has been installed outside of 50 Main Street in downtown White Plains. The building is Ginsburg Development Company’s (GDC) massive new growth project that spans an entire city block. The sculpture is the latest collaboration between GDC and ArtsWestchester. Titled Fragments of Something Bigger, the teardrop-shaped art resides on a pedestal at the threshold of the building.

“This exciting new sculpture is yet another example of how, working in partnership with ArtsWestchester, we are bringing outstanding public art to Downtown White Plains and Westchester County,” says GDC Principal Martin Ginsburg. In the upcoming weeks, GDC will be installing two sculptures that previously stood outside 50 Main Street and 1-11 Martine for decades: “First Case” and “Contact” by the late sculptor Seward Johnson. The sculptures have been restored by the Seward Johnson Atelier and will make their grand return to Main Street and Martine Avenue on August 26 and 27.

“[Georgi] Minchev’s signature steel sculpture will welcome visitors to White Plains and feel fresh and new every time people pass by it due to the varied reflection of light off the sculpture’s material,” explains Janet T. Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester. She continues, “Working with innovative developers like Martin Ginsburg, ArtsWestchester is proud to be enlivening Westchester’s cities and towns with world-class works of public art.”

The selected sculpture is the work of Bulgarian artist Georgi Minchev. Minchev submitted work along with 36 other sculptors. The competitive selection process, managed by ArtsWestchester, also received submissions from renowned Rockland County artists David Provan and Piero Manrique.

GDC and ArtsWestchester have had a longstanding history of working together. Last year, the two unveiled the work of nine artists from the greater Westchester area as part of GDC’s investment in its art collection for 50 Main Street. The unveiling was part of a grand opening of the first phase of GDC’s reinvention of the 50 Main Street office building, which has since expanded into a new mezzanine amenity level.

The former office building One Martine Ave has undergone a massive transformation this past year. Now boasting less business and more pleasure, the 188-unit luxury mixed-use apartment building houses new retail shops, a restaurant, and the private rooftop escape City Square Park. Above the 1,000-space parking garage deck is where you can find this impressive green space acre that connects all the buildings and features fountains and walking paths.

Martin Ginsburg’s personal One Martine Gallery is a focal point of City Square, the renovation project that spans a full city block between 1-11 Martine Avenue and 50 Main Street. One Martine is one of the largest commercial art galleries in Westchester, specializing in all types of contemporary art. A large attribute of the new common space is a contemporary art collection curated by ArtsWestchester that features numerous Hudson Valley artists.
