A combination café, market and gift shop, The Market at Union Hall in North Salem has fast become a communal retreat for area residents. The owners have created a welcoming place to sit over a cup of coffee, grab some needed household essentials, or shop for apparel or home items.
Opened in March in “cozier” digs from the previous Union Hall General Store, new owners, and married couple, Jeffrey Albanesi and Daniel Pereira envisioned a “space with good food, good energy, and good vibrations.” Pereira spent 15 years working at Nature’s Temptations organic market, first in Cross River and then in Ridgefield, where he became the store’s manager. Having a background in the organic industry and wanting to continue building connections with customers, Pereira was eager to take on the opportunity to create a “European country market.”
The café section offers prepared sandwiches and salads, pastries and superb cakes from a variety of area bakers. Customers can sit at the marble counter, at a number of tables, or commune with nature in a lovely garden area.
In the market section, customers will find products running the gamut from toilet paper to granola bars. There’s a refrigerator with such items as local milk, cheeses, and eggs, a freezer with items ranging from ice cream to gluten-free breads, and The Balancing Rock Gift Room where there are candles, frames, and North Salem-branded merchandise.

It’s obvious when you’re at the market that Pereira is fulfilling his mission of “creating a destination that’s more than simply about food; it’s about impacting people’s lives in a positive way.” A tagline on the Market’s T-shirt says, “Nothing But Love Comes Through This Door.” Whether you’re sipping a hemp latte or indulging in decadent coconut cake, that love is a two-way street.
