Is Mrs. Green’s in the Red?

After a trio of closings and stocking issues in the county, Mrs. Green’s insists there will be no changes in Westchester

From an outside perspective it seems that Mrs. Green’s has hit a rough patch. The Irvington-based chain recently closed two stores in Illinois as well as one in East Windsor, New Jersey. A fourth store in New Canaan, Connecticut is also closed, but a spokesperson for the company notes that the shutdown is temporary.

This coincides with the fact that several stores throughout the Hudson Valley and Westchester are currently not being restocked. A recent visit to the Rye location revealed several empty shelves and under-stocked departments. According to Mrs. Green’s officials, however, locations in the county are currently set to remain open.

“While challenges are forcing us to close our Chicago store, we want to thank all of our customers and our entire team who treated us like family,” says Pat Brown, CEO of Natural Market Food Groups, which owns the supermarket chain. “Mrs. Green’s will continue to focus our resources on the northeast market and provide our customers with both healthy-living opportunities and the highest quality local and organic products.”

A company spokesperson corroborated Brown’s remarks, stating that the Hudson Valley stores are still operating but that the company has posted signs in the front of each location apologizing for the supply challenges. He adds that the leadership is working hard to solve the issues as soon as possible.

These issues come on the heels of two area closings of Mrs. Green’s locations last year: one in Mahopac and another in Katonah. As of 2014, Mrs. Green’s planned to open 20 new locations in the region. A year later, Mrs. Green’s Rye and West Village locations opened as part of a major rebranding and redesign helmed by Brown.

The current status of this expansion is unknown, as Mrs. Green’s navigates the recent issues. As of now, there have been no recent closings in the eight Westchester cities and towns that are home to Mrs. Green’s supermarkets.
