The popularity of juicing has reached an all-time high, but should you drink your meals by “juicing” fruits and veggies? Probably not, says Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Barrie Wolfe, MS, RD. “Chewing tells your brain that you’re eating, so your brain won’t register fullness from liquids. I’d rather have my clients eat the fruit whole. The only time I’m okay with juicing is when people need more calories, or they’re not going to eat kale salad because it grosses them out. Then it’s okay, but only to fill in nutritional voids.” Juiced fruit is high in sugar and low on healthy fiber; try a “green drink” of veggies and herbs tempered with one serving of fruit.
