Home Theater, March 2012

What to add to your DVD queue this month.

The Muppets
DVD Release Date: March 20, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
The return of Kermit, Miss Piggy, et al., is all the reason you should need to rush out for a copy of The Muppets, but here are some extra bonuses if you’re still on the fence: The script was written by co-written by Jason Segal, How I Met Your Mother star and writer of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It’s an all-out musical, with Oscar-worthy songs from Flight of the Conchords’s Bret McKenzie. It’s filled with Muppety self-referential humor and celebrity cameos. And did we already mention that Miss Piggy is in it?

Immortals
DVD Release Date: March 6, Universal Studios Home Entertainment
If you’re in the mood for a dumb action move—and we mean really dumb—at least Immortals has one thing to recommend it: It looks gorgeous, thanks to director Tarsem Singh, known for his amazing visuals in movies like The Fall and The Cell. You get all of the sculpted abs and ultra-violent battles of movies like 300 and Troy, but this time with a much prettier sheen to them.

Melancholia
DVD Release Date: March 13, Magnolia Home Entertainment
This little indie, a beautifully impressionistic work about the consequences of the discovery of an approaching planet, was woefully overlooked in favor of a better-received beautifully impressionistic film (The Tree of Life) and, improbably, another movie about the discovery of an approaching planet (Another Earth). It’s a pity, because Lars von Trier’s film is gorgeous, devastating, and features the best performance Kirsten Dunst will ever bring to the screen.

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season
DVD Release Date: March 6, HBO Home Video
Who knows when you’re going to get the next George R. R. Martin book? It was six years in between his most recent book, A Dance with Dragons, and the previous one, A Feast for Crows. You’re better off rewatching this HBO adaptation, which Entertainment Weekly says is an epic fantasy where “sex ’n’ violence is also better grounded in plot and motivation than in other recent TV efforts.” Sounds good to us.
