Staying healthy and well has been a priority now more than ever. Even in our uncertain environment, Westchester’s health and wellness experts can help you reach your personal goals for looking and feeling your very best.

Getting the smile you always wanted

Q. My teeth have gotten worn and old looking. How can I bring back my youthful smile?
“During this COVID 19 pandemic, everyone should be wearing a mask when venturing out, but hopefully, soon we can show our smiles in public. When that happens, if you are concerned about worn and discolored teeth, gaps and chipped teeth, a smile makeover not only addresses all of these issues, but can make you look 15 years younger. Using a range of techniques from bleaching to porcelain veneers, we create beautiful and natural-looking smiles. Before any work is done, a photograph is taken and revised to reveal how your new smile will look. Once you love the look of trial veneers, the porcelain veneers are created, and you leave with the smile you’ve always wanted. We also share our approach to esthetics with other dentists through the classes we teach and our articles and chapters on cosmetic dentistry.”

Restoring a healthy smile

Q. What can I do about a dark tooth right in the front of my smile?
“A single dark or broken tooth in the front of your smile can often be easily fixed. We first determine whether a root canal on the tooth is needed or if a previous root canal needs re-treatment. Next, with CEREC technology we use an all-digital process to make a crown or a veneer in about an hour and a half. The damaged tooth can be made to look identical to any tooth near it. Colors and other details can be added to the printed tooth and the customized crown is bonded in — all in the same appointment.”

Keeping healthy and fit through winter

Q. What is a good way to stay healthy this winter?
Christina Burns, Spa Director of the Emerson Spa at Emerson Resort & Spa, endorses easy, quick yoga poses to ward off winter travel bugs. “To change the blood flow and redirect pranic energy, lay on the floor for a few moments with your legs lifted over your head and against a wall,” says Burns. “This simple pose helps relieve stress, calm the nervous system, and spark the body’s inner ability to heal itself.”

Staying active during a sedentary winter

Q. What are some ways to stay active and joint healthy this winter?
“Winter is the perfect season to shake up your exercise habits. Try mixing in some biking and swimming with your running schedule as part of a cross-training program. This regimen will help lessen the stress on certain joints and lower the risk for overuse injuries. If the weather obliges, take a vigorous walk or jog through the snow for a bit more resistance and aerobic benefits than your usual sidewalk or street walks. Finally, exercise while being relatively still with yoga, Pilates, or even Tai Chi. All are wonderful workouts for both the mind and body, which you can do from the comfort of your own home.”

Losing weight effectively

Q. What is an effective way to lose stubborn pounds?
“More often than not, stubborn pounds that linger on the body and are difficult to lose are due to the build-up of toxicity in our bodies. For those who have a hard time losing that weight even with increased exercise and a lower caloric intake, therapeutic mud/clay-packing provides a safe and highly effective solution. Poor food choices are frequently the culprit in impeding our ability to lose weight. In most cases, our over-indulgence in sugar, fats, and dairy products are at the core of interfering with weight loss. Mud/clay packing detoxes the body and removes damaging blockages that prevent effective weight loss. Bottom line, no matter what health improvement you are seeking, mud/clay-packing will help you achieve it faster, more completely, and with longer-lasting results.”

Receiving care during COVID-19

Q. How can I safely seek care from my doctor during the second wave of the pandemic?
“We understand it may be difficult to get into the doctor’s office, especially if you are quarantined, home schooling children, or exercising additional caution during the pandemic, but it’s critical to stay healthy and well during this time and stay on top of any chronic conditions. Your care team at Westmed is here for you, offering in-person or Virtual Visits with your primary care providers and most specialists. Westmed Medical Group is arguably one of the safest places you can be at this time. Our offices remain open for in-person visits, and we have implemented rigorous safety and sanitizing protocols, such as masking, frequent deep cleaning, mobile check-in, socially distanced waiting rooms, and limited visitor policies. If you need care urgently, you can
make a reservation online to visit one of our many Urgent Care Centers, including diagnostic testing for COVID-19 if you are symptomatic or have had a direct exposure to the virus. If you still have questions or need help, contact your Primary Care Physician via the My Westmed Patient Portal or over the phone.”

Considering prenatal genetic counseling

Q. How have the recommendations regarding prenatal screening changed?
“Today, prenatal screening is an increasingly common part of the pregnancy journey. Once a service that was only offered to women over 35 years old, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recently revised their practice guidelines to say that women of all ages should be offered genetic screening. Working closely with OBGYNs, genetic counselors interpret genetic test results and guide and support patients seeking more information about inherited diseases, medical histories, which tests might be right for them, and how to make informed choices based on the results. Even if you aren’t interested in having a genetic screening, it always helps to sit down with a counselor and hear about the various options.”
