Harrison’s Food Cred Just Ticked Up With the Opening of a Farmers’ Market!

The town of Harrison is unveiling its first farmers’ market this Saturday, featuring 15+ vendors.

Calling all Harrison residents: Looking for a new source for fresh produce, local honey, and baked goods? From May 20 through November 18, head to Ma Riis Park between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the new Harrison Farmers’ Market. The town had never had a market to call its own, making Saturday’s grand opening a truly exciting event.

The market will feature approximately 15 farmers offering locally grown, organic produce. Additional vendors include pork charcuterie from Mangalitsa By Mosefund (based in Branchville, NJ); baked goods from Kingston-based Meredith’s Country Bakery and Wave Hill Breads (based in Norwalk; and a vast assortment of plants, flowers, dairy products, honey, and prepared foods from Wright’s Farm (based in Gardiner, NY).

Believe it or not, the process of opening the farmers’ market was no easy feat for the Harrison Chamber of Commerce. “[We] had been working to bring [a farmers’ market] to the community for approximately two years before finally getting the approvals and logistics needed for our May 20 opening day,” says Holly Sharpe, president of the HCOC. “Our hope is that by bringing customers to the market, our business districts will see an increase of awareness and traffic to our stores, spreading a positive light on all Harrison has to offer.”

The newest addition to Down to Earth Markets, the Harrison Farmers’ Market will have ample space for parking, due to the Metro-North lots just across from the Ma Riis Park walkway. “We wanted to make sure that we picked a spot that would work for the shoppers, the town and for us in the long term,” says Dacotah Rousseau, marketing and communications manager of Down to Earth Markets.

No more will Harrison residents have to trek to Rye, New Rochelle, or Larchmont for fresh, locally-sourced goods. Down to Earth’s Westchester Territory Manager Kate Cascone says it best: “I think it is so important that communities have access to clean fresh food that hasn’t been transported across the country or world, and I’m happy that we…can bring that to Harrison.”
