‘City Limits’ is an apt name for the lower-Westchester diner: It straddles the border between classic, low-cost diner and high-quality, scratch-made fare. Recently, it’s also upped its game in the bar and lounge arena.
Even after trying out half-priced appetizers, General Manager Nick Livanos found diners tended to stick with their old standbys. He credits the idea for cheaper, smaller portions to the hearty bar food available in Spain: “If it’s a smaller dish…” he pauses, “Before you know it you’re ordering two deep. It gives you a nice variety,” he finishes. “People come here to eat, and have a drink while they’re eating. If we do the appetizers in smaller portions – like tapas – they’ll also try something different.”

The tapas analogy is quite fitting. Happy Hour portions of classic apps are available for only $5.95 apiece in the bar and lounge area from 3-7 p.m., Monday through Friday – a full hour longer now that they’ve proved so tantalizing.

Dishes include traditional wings in a homemade Buffalo sauce; enormous, fall-off-the-bone, in-house smoked ribs; chicken and pulled pork quesadillas; loaded nachos with house-pickled jalapeños and fresh guac; classic fried calamari with decidedly adventurous jalapeño-infused marinara; and made-to-order mac ’n’ cheese featuring a cheddar, mozzarella, and Monterey Jack cheese blend.

Potables haven’t been left out either: $4 drafts from five rotating taps, six $5 wines, $5 Mimosas and Bellinis, and $7 specialty cocktails make for a wide variety of drinks to wash down your bar bites. Highly recommended is the mango-jalapeño Margarita. Utilizing pepper-infused tequila, this drink is very sweet, a little smoky, and pairs excellently with any of the spicier edibles on-hand. (Fair warning: it might also knock you off your bar stool.)
For your new favorite after-work hangout, or just to try something new you’ve been eying, stop on by the City Limits Diner and pull up a chair.
