| Mancala in the middle “One of the things that drives me bonkers is struggling to look through flowers at the dining table to see the person across from me. It’s so annoying,” says Smith, who prefers to see a shorter but equally interesting piece used as a centerpiece. This piece—actually a mancala game board made by the Baule Tribe of the Ivory Coast ($850)—creates just the right effect. “It’s not intrusive, but once the candles are lit, it certainly makes a statement.” |  |

Center cage “My initial thought was to have this sit on a dining-room sideboard, but it also could hang from the ceiling filled with candles,” Smith says of this vintage 1960s birdcage from Morocco ($299). “Dining rooms primarily are used at night, and the candlelight coming through the wire would cast interesting shadows.” |

Fit for a king Created by the Yoruban tribes of West Africa, this basket ($490) traditionally is used by a king during public ceremonies. “The color is stunning,” Smith says. “It’s also well priced, considering the amount of work that went into creating it.” |

With more than three decades in her field, interior designer Linda Blair, ASID, knows exactly how to adjust her approach to help clients achieve the look they’re after. “I can work with a very clean palette, but I also can work with a traditional one. I don’t stay just in a single style,” says the owner of The Blair Interiors Group, Ltd., in Scarsdale. And accessories, many of which she can find at The Dark Horse in Scarsdale (located just across the street from her studio) help pull the look together. “If you don’t have good accessories, your space can resemble a furniture store,” says the author of Design Sense: A Guide to Getting the Most from Your Interior Design Investment (John Wiley & Sons, 1996). “If the accessories are judiciouly chosen and placed, they can be the elements adding the tension or calm to a room that make all the difference.”

For Bronxville-based interior designer Tania Cavalheiro, ASID, what’s old can be new again—as long as it’s used in a completely different way. “I try to transform pieces, to group them in a variety ways in order to create something distinctive,” says the Brazil native. It’s precisely for this reason that she gravitates to Peoria in Bronxville, an eight-year-old boutique whose owners, Elena Agostinis Patterson and Patricia Stevens, describe themselves as “conversionistas,” always striving to find new lives for old pieces.

Ad-ded value Cavalheiro loves the color, texture, and detail that went into creating this bowl ($89), which women in Manila fashioned from discarded ad flyers. “I would purchase several and hang them on the wall together,” she says. “The repetition would be dynamic, creating one big work of art.” |
| Best footstool forward Created in India from quilted sari fabric, these 16-inch footstools ($64 each) come in a variety of shades and patterns. “I love this because it’s really simple,” says Cavalheiro. “In addition to its obvious function as a footstool, I would use it in a smaller setting as a side table.” |  |

Pop charts “Of course I would use them as coasters,” says Cavalheiro of these rubber-backed coasters crafted from vintage bottle caps ($24 for a set of four). “But I could also cover a main wall in an entry hall.” The designer likes to bring fun pieces and whimsical touches into a home, but cautions against going overboard. “It’s more about subtle integration.” |
| Shady proposition This outdoor patio umbrella from India ($450) may have been created to shade its owner, but Cavalheiro, who is “fascinated with new interpretations,” doesn’t want to hide away the exquisite accessory for a sunny day. She might consider hanging it upside down as an indoor focal point, similar to the way the store owners display it. |  |

EXPO Design Center New Rochelle
To home in on clients’ design tastes, Michael Wiener, ASID, frequently takes them to EXPO Design Center in New Rochelle. “It’s a one-stop shop,” says the owner of Michael Wiener Design Group in Briarcliff Manor, who brings four decades of experience to the table. “There are so many styles under one roof,” he says, “so I know right away they don’t like dark wood or love granite.” The store offers a slew of options—from light fixtures and window treatments to kitchen cabinets and accessories—so coordinating looks is a cinch. In a nod to eclectic style, Wiener also advocates picking a few pieces that can update a tired space. “Looks change from year to year, and if your home is just one style—such as all Louis the XIV—you can be sitting in quite an antiquated room.”

Basin instinct Tiny powder rooms don’t have to sacrifice big chic, posits Wiener. “This one little sink would not only transform the room, but give it a lot of style,” he says of the 24-inch vanity with a ceramic basin and—surprise!—storage space behind the mirror ($1,345). |

Flower power “This would work well in a large entry foyer atop a table or under a chandelier,” Wiener declares. “It’s creates a very festive welcome.” Created by in-store visualist Angela Velez, this silk flower arrangement’s best feature: realistic-looking blooms that appear as if they’ve just been picked. Prices vary. |

European elegance While you might not typically troll a superstore hunting for sculpture or paintings, Wiener says he often finds eye-catching but reasonably priced artwork at EXPO. “Often, these pieces are priced under $200,” he says. He was drawn to this particular oil on canvas work ($125) because of its classic style and versatility.

| Light idea Wiener is keen on this 12-light bronze-finished chandelier with shimmering crystals ($799) for the shape of the crystals and the color of the wrought iron. “You could easily dress this up or dress it down,” he says. “Over a dining table topped with beautiful china and goblets, it would seem very dressy. If the table was set instead for a casual get-together, it still wouldn’t look out of place.” |  |

Bedford-based interior designer Susan Marocco, ASID, isn’t one for cookie-cutter designs. Why not tailor a look to a client’s specific tastes and needs? “Each client is unique, so each design solution is unique, reflecting his or her lifestyle and interests,” she says. Her answer: customization. At Country Willow in Bedford Hills, Marocco not only has a huge range of products to choose from, but almost everything in the store can be customized. “Working with Country Willow gives me the opportunity to transform a client’s homes into a comfortable refuge,” she says. “The store’s flexibility provides me with the tools to execute my design vision, exploring options for how to best use my client’s space.”

Show them the door Dating back to the 1860s, this one-of-a-kind antique door and frame from India ($3,275) is covered in intricate, detailed carvings. “You can lean it up against the wall like a piece or art,” says Marocco. “You just know you’re not going to see it” in your neighbor’s house. |
| Bucket list These 80-year-old rice buckets from China ($115) come in a slew of sizes and can be used for, well, anything. “They’re great as a magazine rack or to hold firewood,” the designer says. “You could put a display of flowers or branches inside. It’s one of those pieces that pulls a room together.” |  |

Farm hand “I love this because it can be made of either reclaimed pine or antique cherry,” Marocco says of this trestle farm table ($3,560). “The pine is somewhere between 100 and 150 years old, from either barn siding or flooring. And the table can be customized with either a different pedestal or different banding.”
