All the Best Things to Do, See, and Eat in and Around Westchester This Week

Hollywood glitz, fairy dust, and neon glowing tubes are just some of the things topping our to-do list this week.

Tuesday, September 11

If you’re looking for a form of remembrance this year other than one of Westchester’s many official ceremonies, consider heading over to the Bedford Playhouse for a free one-day screening of Rebirth, a film which follows the lives of five people significantly affected by the World Trade Center attacks in the years just after those events. A Q&A session will follow the film, with producer David Solomon.

Yorktown’s Feast of San Gennaro kicks off with the traditional procession of the blessed statue of St. Januarius. After that, enjoy music both traditional and modern, plenty of games and rides, and all your favorite foods like sausage and peppers, Italian ice, and Nonna’s famous zeppole! If you can’t make it Wednesday, don’t worry; the party runs straight through the weekend. Tickets are free, although food, rides, and games are extra.

Later that evening, jump the border and visit The Palace in Stamford for iLuminate, a Technicolor music and dance experience that does for TRON suit neon piping what Blue Man Group did for, well, blue men who really like drumming on things that aren’t drums. The show features insane choreography and music eclectically ranging from Michael Jackson to LMFAO.

Saturday, September 15

Pelham’s The Picture House is holding its seventh annual Picnic in the Park, from 6 to 11 p.m. Cocktails, popcorn, and a special advance screening of the hotly anticipated Bel Canto will be followed by a Q&A with director Paul Weitz. Photo courtesty the New Castle Historical Society

Speaking of picnics, The New Castle Historical Society will be hosting its fall benefit, a Jazz-Era Picnic in the Park. Get ready for Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra to have you swinging all night long (well, from 4 to 8 p.m., at least). Bring your own picnic or snack on some of the light fare offered, and make sure to come dressed in your finest vintage ’20s apparel. (Period costumes are not mandatory, but they sure are fun!) Tickets range $30-$50.

Lastly, for younger county residents (and the ethereally young-at-heart), stop by Muscoot Farms for their annual Fairy Walk. Joan the Fairy Queen will be on-hand for guided tours of the farm’s fae residents, which take about 20 to 30 minutes. Volunteers will offer fairy-themed craft activities, and guests should be made aware that costumes are encouraged as they please the fair folk. Admission is free; come any time between noon and 3 p.m.
