4 Sophisticated and Elegant Wedding-Day Looks

Makeup, hair, and accessories to complete your bridal style.

Sophisticated Statement

If you have a darker complexion, you definitely want to go with more prominent colors for your eyes and cheeks to make them really stand out. Rosemarie Pomilla of N.Y. Prostyle Bridal recommends you “gravitate toward warm tones and rich browns with a black shadow in the crease, because it really complements the skin tone.” A burnt orange blush and neutral lip is also a good idea, because it’s subtle and natural, without taking away from the eyes. For coarser hair, you should always have a blowout or straighten your hair before styling it, because it smooths the hair and helps create a sleek and polished up-do.

Simply Sweet

Jill K. Imbrogno of JKFlashy explains that “if you have almond-shaped eyes, I would recommend recreating the natural crease to create the illusion of a more proportionate eyelid and brow bone, which is extremely flattering and pops the eye.” (See opening spread.) The pearlized shimmer eye shadow she uses accentuates the inner eye and brings out the green undertones in the model’s light brown eyes. If you have fair skin, you should use a pink-based bronzer, which will bring out the natural pink in your skin. “Having an oval face shape means a flattering look in just about any hairstyle,” Diane Cermele of Salon POSH notes. But, if you have a few tones of blonde to your hair, curls or waves go hand-in-hand with the highlights because it gives the hair a more intricate and three-dimensional look. Parting your hair to the side also softens the appearance.

Something Blue

Fawn Monique of Fawn Monique Makeup Artistry divulges a trade secret: For fuller lips, put a touch of illumination on the cupid’s bow or “m” of your lips to really make them pop, as she does here. If you have a medium skin tone, you should go with a warm-colored foundation to enhance your complexion. For eyes that have a smaller upper lid line and smaller crease, it’s best to use both highlighting and contouring colors to really bring out the shape of your eye. If you have brown eyes, you can wear any color shadow, but bronze tones create a more subtle and natural look. For eyebrows that are a little short, they can be extended with shadow to complete the shape. You can brush eyeliner through a mascara wand first to create your base. If you have more of a square-shaped face, it’s recommended to use a bronzer right on your cheek and upwards into the contour of your eye, because it balances the shape and creates more definition.

Understated Elegance

If you have a warmer, more golden complexion, it’s best to go with a soft, smoky eye, as Valerie Guglielmo of Vis a Vis Artistry does here. You should use warm, golden, and bronze tones to complement your tan complexion. “If you have almond-shaped eyes and want to accentuate their shape,” she says, “then put the emphasis on the outer corner and go lighter on the lid.” If you have high cheekbones, the contour will look best if you highlight just right below your eye. And for already naturally full lips, go with a similar color to your lip that embellishes it, giving a clean look without distracting from the rest of your face. For long, thick hair, layers work best, because it cuts down on the heaviness of it and creates more flow and movement, which complements a wavy or loose curl.
