Brandywine Valley Home and Garden Tours: Nemours

This colossal French Neoclassical-style mansion is situated on 222 acres of woodlands and gardens, including what is reputed to be the largest formal French garden in North America.

Named for the region in France from where the du Ponts emigrated in 1799, Nemours is a French Neoclassical-style mansion with an astounding 47,000 square feet of interior space sitting on 222 acres of woodlands and gardens, including what is reputed to be the largest formal French garden in North America.  Everything here feels larger than life, like the one-square-acre reflecting pool or the dining room that once sat 72, lit by an enormous chandelier. The library alone contains four centuries of art. The lower level of the house has a gym with an old fashioned steam box, an exercise horse (remember Urban Cowboy?), bowling alley, movie screen, shuffleboard table and billiard room. A visit to the chauffeur’s garage is a car enthusiast’s dream with a 1951 Silver Wraith Rolls Royce, 1960 Phantom V, and a 1933 Buick Sport Coupe with rumble seat.
