1) The Perfect Storm (Sebastian Junger)
“You won’t want to put this book down,” says Gregory, who recalls reporting on the effects this October 1991 storm had for the New York area. While the novel focuses on the fishermen lost at sea during this “monster of a storm” off the Northeast Coast, the author, says Gregory, “also provides great detail on how it formed.”

2) Isaac’s Storm (Erik Larson)
Gregory calls this look at a major hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas, in 1900, in which 10,000 lives were lost, a particularly suspenseful read. “It gives an electrifying account of events.”

3) Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Peter Lewis)
Gregory says this fun kids’ title about meatballs, hamburgers, and scrambled eggs—and, on bad-weather days, overcooked broccoli and thick tomato sauce—falling from the sky, gets lots of laughs when he reads it aloud at young reader events. “It brings weather forecast into a whole new dimension for children to enjoy.”

4) The Blizzard of 1888 (Mary Cable)
The meteorologist highly recommends this look at how New York City residents in the late 19th century coped with the monster three-day snowstorm of the title. “Because power and phone lines were above-ground at the time, the City was truly paralyzed,” he says.

5) Extreme Weather (Christopher C. Burt)
“A great read for anyone into weather records and facts,” says Gregory. The book gives accounts of weather records from 300 weather stations across the country. It also highlights some of the more historic and bizarre weather events.
