How Community Gifts Enhance Care

Philanthropic investment is a special and important source of support for the programs and healthcare providers at Phelps Hospital. Through the generosity of hundreds of individuals, foundations, and businesses, Phelps has been able to develop creative new initiatives and acquire vital resources that address the unique health needs of our community. Below are just a few examples of how our supporters have enhanced the level of care at Phelps:

Community Partnerships

Recognizing the critical partnership between our local emergency services providers and Phelps Hospital, members of the Batheja family joined forces and created the Narain L. Batheja, MD Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Batheja Family Endowment. These funds support a unique collaboration between Phelps’ renowned Hoch Center for Emergency Education and the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps (OVAC). Instructors from OVAC have access to Phelps’ extensive training resources and facilities, conduct educational sessions for local emergency and medical providers, and obtain lifesaving equipment not otherwise available in the field.

A Family Tradition

Giving is a family tradition for Bruce and Aphrodite Garrison. Their support of the innovative Donald R. Reed Speech & Hearing Center spans two generations. Bruce’s mother served on the Center’s board for many years, including serving as President in 1994 until her death in 1995. A bequest from her estate funded the purchase of equipment to start the Center’s audiology service. Bruce and Aphrodite have continued to support the Center as it expanded into new professional areas, incorporated the latest technologies, and provided services to patients in the hospital who are increasingly referred to the Center’s staff for evaluation.

Investing Makes Good Business Sense

As integral parts of communities, businesses often invest in local organizations to help bring their programs to the next level. TD Bank embodies this principle through their support of Phelps’ Nursing Promise program. Nursing Promise provides talented Phelps employees who are accepted in an accredited nursing program leading to an RN degree and license, with incentives and financial assistance. Support from TD Bank enabled Phelps to extend the program to individuals working toward their BS degree in Nursing. Since these individuals are expected to work at Phelps after graduation, this program directly enhances the level of care at the hospital.

Honoring A Loved One

Looking for a meaningful way to honor her late husband, Nancy Olson, through the William Olson Memorial Fund, provided a generous grant to help fund a telehealth pilot project at Phelps. Conducted in collaboration with the Visiting Nurse Association of Hudson Valley, patients with chronic health issues receive in-home monitoring of their blood pressure, pulse, weight and oxygen levels. Patients then work closely with VNA telehealth nurses and Phelps Medical Associates providers to develop ways to improve their health. A year into the pilot, we are already seeing a positive impact on the health of participants and there are plans to expand the pilot patient population.

Supporting New Initiatives

Phelps Hospice has been serving Westchester County for over 30 years. Thanks to the support of generous individuals like Elizabeth Straight, the program recently expanded its services and has developed a new palliative care initiative that focuses on adults who are living with serious illness. Philanthropic support also ensures that patients and their families can access Hospice services, regardless of their finances.

Doing Good Through Events

If you have visited Phelps’ Cardiovascular Laboratory lately, you noticed an extraordinary change. Thanks to the many donors to the Fund-A-Cause auction at Phelps’ Champagne Ball, the Cardiovascular Lab received a complete renovation, which included additional procedure rooms, dedicated reception areas for outpatients and inpatients, and new sinks, cabinetry and flooring throughout the space. We are especially appreciative to Tom and Alice Marie Hales, who matched all gifts pledged that evening for this renovation.
