10 Must-Dos for Your Westchester Bucket List

Things to do in Westchester before you…well, you know.

1. Block out some time for LEGOLAND® – The new LEGOLAND® Discovery Center in Yonkers offers attractions for kids and adults alike, including a MINILAND featuring some of New York’s famous attractions, master building classes, an interactive laser ride, a 4D cinema, and Lego pieces galore!

2. Take your pick of tasty apples – Come to North Salem September through October for apple-picking at the Outhouse family’s orchard. You can pick Baldwins, Cortlands, Romes, and more. There’s also a corn maze and tractor rides.

3. Appreciate the art of pumpkin carving – Every October, Croton-on-Hudson’s Van Cortlandt Manor hosts the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, featuring literally THOUSANDS of carved and customized pumpkins flickering their warm orange lights in fields, on porches, mounted on stakes—even in trees! It’s definitely a sight to see, and is guaranteed to get you into the Halloween spirit.

4. Bike the Bronx – On certain summer Sundays between 10am and 2pm, motor vehicles are banned from the Parkway between White Plains’ Westchester County Center and the town of Yonkers, allowing bikers, roller skaters, and other non-motorized travelers to freely enjoy the road.

5. Tee it up – Westchester is home to some of the nation’s sweetest golf. Among these are Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale and Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck. Not a member? Not a problem! Many clubs offer day memberships for attending one of the summer’s many charity golf outings.

6. Ride a wooden coaster – The rush of adrenaline. The wind in your face. The slow climbs and swift drops. There’s nothing like riding a wooden rollercoaster. Luckily, Rye’s own Playland amusement park has a great one. This more than 80-year-old Rye landmark features 3,400 feet of track with a 128-foot drop.

7. Be part of the Capitol crowd – There’s nothing like attending a concert at the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester. As stated in Westchester Magazine, “Janice Joplin wrote ‘Mercedez Benze’ at a Port Chester bar before a performance (one of her last) at the Capitol Theatre back in 1970.” More recently, the theatre has hosted many acclaimed music acts; including Herbie Hancock, Alice Cooper, and Neutral Milk Hotel.

8. Make a trip to Muscoot Farm – Fans of the Beatles-themed 2007 film Across the Universe, rejoice! This 19th-century working farm was used as one of the movie’s settings. Even if ’60s music isn’t your thing, Muscoot offers visitors the opportunity to explore the historic barns and outbuildings, watch farm-life demonstrations, and, on weekends, attend hayrides and other special events.

9. Gaze upon the stained glass – Pocantico Hills’ Union Church is a historic, stone chapel that features a series of beautiful stained-glass windows created by Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse.

10. Dine where “X” marks the spot – X20 Xaviars on the Hudson, the hip Yonkers restaurant where celebrity chef Peter X. Kelly does his thing, has a Sunday brunch that includes breads, appetizers, a choice of two savory dishes and dessert, not to mention unlimited Champagne.
It’s the meal of a lifetime!
