Best Places to Live: Central Village, Tarrytown

Views of Manhattan, a nearby boat club, and stunning river views and sunsets will sell you on this neighborhood in no time.

Blueprint: The village of Tarrytown, settled in 1645,  is situated on the eastern shore of the Hudson, in an area called the Tappan Zee (named for Tappan Indians, who once lived in what is now Rockland County). Revolutionary War spy Major John Andre was captured in what is now Patriots Park, which divides the village from Sleepy Hollow.

Façade: Ranked by Forbes as one of the prettiest towns in the US, Tarrytown offers abundant river views, a walkable village center dotted with boutiques and cafes, a 35-minute express train to Manhattan, a short walk to new waterfront developments, and the Hudson RiverWalk park.

Foundation: Notable landmarks include the Tarrytown Music Hall, the Tappan Z Gallery, and the recently opened Jazz Forum Club. Ethnically diverse, with a strong Latino population, Central Tarrytown features historic architecture and inner-village Colonial homes on small lots. Diverse dining options — including Korean, Portuguese, Greek, and more — abound. “I couldn’t imagine working or living anywhere else. It has charm like no other Westchester town,” says Alicia Love of Coffee Labs Roasters.

Recent Reno: The replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge is near completion. Once the Scenic Hudson RiverWalk Park is done, there will be a continuous walking-and-riding path stretching from Yonkers to Peekskill.

Trending: “This is a great market for sellers and a not-so-great market for buyers. The lack of inventory makes it difficult for buyers to compete,” says Marcene Hedayati, broker of record with William Raveis Legends Realty Group. “The percentage of sale price to list is up by 2 percent over last year, and many properties are selling for over list price as a result of multiple offers.”

Selling Points: Views of Manhattan, a nearby boat club, stunning river views and sunsets, a new community pool and recreation center, and parades and street fairs that draw visitors from Manhattan and beyond.

Best Thing About Living Here: “It has everything that makes a community desirable, all within walking distance, not to mention social and economic diversity. It’s a real American town, not some rarified enclave. We couldn’t be happier to raise our kids here.” —Effie Phillips-Staley, recent transplant

Trade-off: Large lots are not typically available in the central village.
