Redoing a room but can't decide on what palette to use? We asked color expert and Ethan Allen design consultant Peggy Fortuna how one should go about choosing a paint color. Here is her advice:
“Start by taking a look at your existing furnishings and flooring. There is usually a color that can be pulled out of the rug or furniture that will tie the room together. If you are not sure which color to select, try experimenting with two choices. Next, think about the mood of the room. Color affects our mood and emotions, so decide if you want the room to be calming or energizing. Calming colors are best for bedrooms and bathrooms while high-energy colors are better for entryways & offices. Once you've narrow down your choices, it's important to look at the paint colors in both day and evening light. Some colors have more personality than others and will change in the course of the day; be sure you like the color as much in the evening as you do in the daytime. Use larger paint chips or paint a swatch of the color on the walls. It's important to remember that colors play off each other, so if you are painting over already painted walls, the new color will be influenced by the existing wall color so you may want to see the paint against a white backdrop. The best rule of thumb is to have fun and experiment. Try to be brave, and remember, it's only paint!”
