Water Bottle Chic

Knock on wood, but I think I’ve finally gotten my workout routine down. Every weekday morning from 7-8, I hit the gym and still manage to get to work on time. But whenever I reach in my pantry to grab a Poland Spring water bottle to take with me, I feel enormously guilty. I shouldn’t be using so many bottles or wasting so much plastic or even spending so much money on water bottles.

I’m aware of the alleged harmful effect of reusing plastic water bottles (they reportedly can trap bacteria and leach DEHP, which is a “probable human carcinogen”). I considered investing in a Nalgene bottle—the staple of college kids and hikers—but, to be honest, I’m not crazy about the design or that fact that some contain a chemical known as Bisphenol-A (BPA), a potentially harmful chemical when leached into water. (It should be noted, though, that not all Nalgene bottles are made with this and that the company is phasing out those made with BPA.

So what’s left? Two things, really. Glass or stainless steel. I could be like Dorna, our web editor, and reuse my VOSS glass bottle or , hey, even a Snapple bottle, but…I’m a bit wary of dropping it on the treadmill. Instead, I think I’m going to stick with the stainless steel. A recent article in Time compared four different types of water bottles and stainless steel ranked right up there with glass. It doesn’t leach chemicals, is easy to reuse, (although you shouldn’t use hot liquids or freeze them) and thankfully for me, comes without the possibility of shattering into a million little pieces.

I’ve checked out various bottles and think I’m going to invest in Klean Kanteen, a company that’s been around since 2004. The bottles are 100 percent recyclable, BPA-free and come in a variety of colors and sizes. For a slightly cheaper version, try the New Wave Enviro bottle, which I found on Amazon for $6.99.

You can find both online and Klean Kanteen’s are available here in the county at American Terrain Outdoors in White Plains (175 East Post Rd; 914-682-3971).

This is the version I’m loving the most: $19.95.

You can go for this pretty pink color for the same price as the green, or the plain stainless steel for $17.45.

My advice to you would be to stick with Voss water - not only is glass the way to go as far as the reclycling question - but Voss is the best tasting bottled water period -

Plus it has the coolest bottles....
